Training

• Kumite – or Sparring is sport karate. This is where two opponents compete to score more points than the other. They do this by being the first to score a valid hit on the opponent. If you wish there is the opportunity to compete for the university at student, national or even international level.

• Katas – or “Form” are the formal exercises that are often demonstrated as a solo sequence of techniques. These sequences are to simulate being attacked by multiple opponents. Many advanced techniques are hidden away within Katas. Bunkai is taught, this is the understanding of the kata and the applications of the techniques.

• Grappling - This involves locks, holds, pressure points and other muscle or joint manipulation techniques. This is great for developing strength as you push or pull against your opponent. It is also referred to as human chess, as you both struggle to get the best position.

• Weapons Training - We do train to defend againist different types of weapons incase the worst happens.

We also train in many other martial arts and styles of karate. These take place in the form of courses, in styles such as Sombo and Systema. We have regular visits from Tony Grainger, 6th Dan in Shukokai Karate. We also have an influx of students of all grades and in many different styles every year. This contributes to the knowledge and skill base at the club, aiding in the ability to be taught varying styles and techniques.
